On Imaginings
Story Catcher
I think happily for me, I am easily able to tap into my creative inner child. So, in a sense, it becomes possible for me to go to that land where those characters are.
History
Melanie Springer is a Barbadian Writer, Multi-media Specialist and Educator. She was born on the island of Antigua, in a time of quiet protest, and steady freedom from oppression into freedom of Pan African expression. While still a toddler, her family relocated to Barbados where she spent the remainder of her formative years. Her late teens were devoted to studying Fine Arts at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas in Puerto Rico, and Art Education at the Barbados Community College. Both experiences were invaluable for exposing her to a wide variety of creative media across diverse cultures..

Education
Her growing passion for the audio-visual would lead her to Martinique where she worked as an au-pair, and gained proficiency in French with the intention to study film in France. She was however so inspired by the multicultural beauty of the Caribbean, that her subsequent travels would ultimately lead her to Cuba and to La Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV). The school boasts among its founders, world renowned author and Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez.
Melanie’s experience of sharing culturally rich creative spaces with the multi-talented and the multi-linguistic was further nourished by the school’s vision of “Polivalencia”. This emphasis on cultivating the well-rounded cinematographer meant that she could, while specialising in Sound Engineering, at the same time immerse herself in the world of Creative Writing.
Career
Between her writing projects, Melanie Springer works as a Producer/Director and as a Consultant in Cinematic Arts for various institutions and cultural bodies in Barbados and the Caribbean Region. Since 2005 she has successfully run her own multi-media production company, providing Brand Communications in the form of Print Ads, TV & Radio Commercials, Documentaries & Features and even Music Videos. The author is also a former tutor of the Barbados Community College Associate Degree in Fine Arts, and of the BFA in Graphic Design programmes. Her areas of focus were Interrelated Media and Creative Writing.
