Melanie R. Springer

Of the many hats she wears, writing has for long been one of Melanie’s greatest passions. Inspired by the cultural diversity of Caribbean peoples, as well as the various countries in which she's lived, Melanie started writing Pearl while at film school in Cuba. Her multi-national background and love of travel has played a pivotal role in shaping the author she is today.

Artist Statement

“Over the years I’ve come to realise that whether it’s painting, filmmaking, or writing, there resides an essential self that is the artist – free to use whatever medium the soul chooses. I enjoy working with a colourful palette as much as experimenting with monochromes. This is as true for the still and moving image, as it is for the poetry and prose of the written word. For all aspects of life (seen and unseen, vibrant and shrouded in mystery) are beautiful, and all are of value to the Universe. The spirit realm and expressions of human social behaviour such as our intimate thoughts and desires hold a deep fascination for me. Helping others connect with their truest, most sovereign, and loving self is a principle of priority for me.“

Loretta took her time going into Pearl's room...Junior wouldn't believe Omar and wouldn't go into Pearl's Room....the suspense ate me up! I was so annoyed with these people! And girl, you captured the essence of the West Indian policeman...too caught up in their own self importance to realize that their job should be rooted in compassion. What &#%!@?! Melanie u see how you have me and me ner done read the book yet!

I just finished your book! Melanie girl, you is a boss writer! You managed to tell what would have otherwise been a sad story with such a descriptive, comical style that it was thoroughly enjoyable. Themes of sincere friendship depicted through Michael, Annie and Davie, and community spirit, were well developed. Also, a very realistic portrayal of the disparity between Town and Country and the prejudiced attitudes that exist.
